WHAT IS Megamentin 375?

Lamoxicillin (Megamentin 375) is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillins. Lamoxicillin (Megamentin) fights bacteria in the body.

Potassium clavulanate is a form of clavulanic acid (Megamentin), which is similar to penicillin. Potassium clavulanate fights bacteria which are often resistant to penicillins and other antibiotics.

The combination of Amoxicillin (Megamentin) and potassium clavulanate is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.

Amoxicillin (Megamentin) and potassium clavulanate can also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

INDICATIONS Megamentin 375

An indication is a term used for the list of conditions or symptoms or diseases for which the medicine is prescribed or used by the patient. For example, paracetamol or paracetamol is used for fever by the patient, or the doctor prescribes it for a headache or body aches. Now fever, headache and body aches are the indications of acetaminophen. A patient must be aware of the indications of the medications used for common conditions because they can be taken over the counter in the pharmaceutical sense without a prescription.

To reduce the development of drug resistant bacteria and to maintain the effectiveness of Megamentin 375 and other antibacterial drugs, Megamentin 375 should only be used to treat infections that have been proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information is available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy.

In the absence of such data, local lepidemiology and susceptibility models can contribute to the empirical selection of therapy. Megamentin 375 extended-release tablets are indicated for the treatment of patients with community-acquired pneumonia or acute bacterial sinusitis due to confirmed or suspected β-lactamase-producing pathogens (i.e. H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, H. parainfluenzae, K. pneumoniae, or methicillin-susceptible S. aureus) and S. pneumoniae with reduced penicillin susceptibility (ie, penicillin MIC = 2 mcg / mL). Megamentin is not indicated for the treatment of infections due to S. pneumoniae with penicillin MICs ≥ 4 mcg / mL. Data are limited regarding infections due to S. pneumoniae with penicillin MICs ≥ 4 mcg / mL.

In patients with community-acquired pneumonia where penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae is suspected, bacteriological studies should be performed to determine causative organisms and their susceptibility when prescribing Megamentin 375.

Acute bacterial sinusitis or community-acquired pneumonia due to a penicillin-sensitive strain of S. pneumoniae plus a pathogen producing β-lactamase can be treated with another AUGMENTIN® product (amoxicillin / clavulanic acid) containing lower daily doses of Amoxicillin (Megamentin) (i.e., 500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours). Acute bacterial sinusitis or community-acquired pneumonia due to S. pneumoniae alone can be treated with Amoxicillin (Megamentin).

DESCRIPTION Megamentin 375

Each film-coated tablet contains Amoxicillin (Megamentin) trihydrate equivalent to Amoxicillin (Megamentin) 500 mg and potassium clavulanate equivalent to 125 mg clavulanic acid (Megamentin), respectively.

Each vial contains Amoxicillin (Megamentin) sodium equivalent to Amoxicillin (Megamentin) 1000 mg and clavulanic acid equivalent to Clavulanic acid (Megamentin) 200 mg, respectively.

Megamentin tablets also contain the following excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, anhydrous colloidal silica, povidone (K30), eudragit E 100, isopropyl alcohol, magnesium stearate, opadryl white 03B58965, PEG400, methylene chloride.

Megamentin 375 is an antibacterial combination consisting of the antibiotic semisynthetic antixycillin (Megamentin) and the β-lactamase inhibitor, clavulanate potassium (the potassium salt of clavulanic acid (Megamentin)). Lamoxicillin (Megamentin) is an ampicillin analog, derived from the basic nucleus of penicillin, 6-aminopenicillanic acid. Its molecular formula is C16H19N305S3H20 and the molecular weight is 419.46. Chemically, Amoxicillin (Megamentin) is (2S, 5R, 6R) -6 [(R) (-) 2-Amino-2- (p-hydroxyphenyl) acetamido] -3, 3-dimethyl-7-oxo- 4-1 -azabicycle [3.2.1] heptane-2-carboxylic acid trihydrate.

Amoxicillin (Megamentin): Clavulanic acid (Megamentin) is produced by the fermentation of Streptomyces clavuligerus. It is a β-lactam structurally related to penicillins and possesses the ability to inactivate a wide variety of β-lactamases by blocking the active sites of these enzymes. Clavulanic acid (Megamentin) is particularly active against clinically important plasmid-mediated β-lactamases, often responsible for drug resistance transferred to penicillins and cephalosporins.
