Description
What is Fliban?
The first and only FDA-approved treatment for Acquired and Generalized Solar Hyoid Desire Disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. defined by the FDA as characterized by low sexual desire that causes marked interpersonal distress or difficulty and is not due to a coexisting medical or psychiatric condition, relationship problems, or the effects of a drug or other pharmaceutical substance. (I already have questions: Does breastfeeding count as a coexisting medical condition? Wait, is it safe while breastfeeding? Sigh. Nevermind.)
Fliban is a non-prescription hormone pill used to treat Hypoactive (Low) Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in women who have not gone through menopause, who have not had problems with low sex drive in the past, and who have low desire sexual, regardless of the type of activity, situation or partner. Women with HSDD have low sex drive which bothers them. Their low sex drive is not due to:
• a medical or mental health problem
• problems in the relationship
• medicine or other drug use
Fliban should not be used to treat HSDD in women who have been through menopause or in men. Fliban should not be used to enhance personal performance. Fliban should not be used in children.
How Do I Take Fliban?
Take 1 Fliban tablet once a day before going to bed.
Take Fliban only before bedtime. Taking Fliban at a time other than bedtime may increase the risk of low blood pressure, fainting (loss of consciousness), accidental injury and sleepiness.
Why is flibanserin (Fliban) controversial?
Complaints from women are so common, and some of the best data we've said is that somewhere between 40% and 50% of women across the spectrum have some kind of complaints about sexual dysfunction. It is very common in one form or another, and there hasn't been much success in drug development for it.
At the advisory board hearing, the Even the Score group led 20 women to provide testimonials about the degree of suffering and how their sexual dysfunction was actually affecting their lives, relationships and sense of well-being.
How serious is female dysfunction and the concerns women have towards them
libido?
It is widespread among populations. I mostly see peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women, but also women between the ages of 20 and 30. [Note: The best study, she said, is a 1999 study in JAMA that found that 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men complained of some form of sexual dysfunction.] It's very stressful for women and the FDA. approved the drug specifically for a lack of sexual desire that causes distress to the woman or her relationship. I have a lot of patients who never have s **, and they are fine with that. The only time it is a problem is whether it is a problem for the woman or her partner. By definition, it is a condition that is causing distress.
What exactly does flibanserin (Fliban) do? How does it affect the body?
This is what's really interesting about this. People are saying it as female Sildenafil, but it is very different from Sildenafil in a couple of important ways. Number one, Sildenafil works almost 100% of the time for men. But only 1 in 10 women will benefit from flibanserin, so it is much less effective than Sildenafil.Number two, Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the pe **, while flibanserin acts on neurotransmitters in the brain, almost like antidepressants. [Flibanserin is actually a failed antidepressant whose mechanism in mice was to act on serotonin differently than other antidepressants and to increase dopamine.]
Number three, with Sildenafil, men take it when they want to have **. Women need to take flibanserin every day, and it takes about four weeks to start seeing an effect. Peak effects are not seen for eight weeks. How many women want to take a drug every day that affects the brain to improve libido?
