Aldactone
Description of the drug Aldactone
Aldactone belongs to a group of drugs commonly known as diuretics or water pills. Diuretics are prescribed to increase the excretion of water and salts from the body through the urine. Aldactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic that prevents the loss of too much potassium from the body through urine. Laldactone is prescribed by doctors to treat several conditions in patients, including lipo-steronism and excessive secretion of the hormone aldesterone. Aldesterone is produced by the adrenal glands and controls the balance of water and salt in the body. The main ingredient of Aldactone oral tablets is spironolactone which is an aldosterone antagonist agent. It is available in three strengths of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. The tablets also contain corn starch, calcium sulfate, iron oxide, polyethylene glycol, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, povidone, hypromellose and flavorings as inactive ingredients. Aldactone 25mg is a light yellow film-coated round tablet with SEARLE 1001 debossed on one side and ALDACTONE 25 debossed on the other side. Aldactone 50mg is a light orange, oval, film-coated, scored tablet with SEARLE 1041 debossed on one side and ALDACTONE 50 debossed on the other side. Aldactone 100mg is a peach-colored, round, film-coated tablet with SEARLE 1031 debossed on one side and ALDACTONE 100 debossed on the other side. All tablets are available in bottles of one hundred tablets each. Aldactone is approved by the FDA and is available by prescription only. It is presented by G. D. Searle, a division of Pfizer Inc.
Conditions treated by Aldactone
Aldactone is recommended for aldesterone management in order to maintain an optimal salt water balance in the body.As a diuretic, it is prescribed for the treatment of several conditions. In patients about to undergo surgery, it is indicated for the short-term preoperative treatment of primary aldosteronism. In patients with adrenal adenomas (tumor) in whom surgery is not feasible and in patients with idiopathic hyperaldosteronism, it is prescribed for long-term maintenance therapy. In patients with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, nephritic syndrome and essential hypertension, Aldactone is prescribed concomitantly to control sodium retention levels and edema (abnormal fluid retention). Aldactone is also prescribed to treat hypokalaemia (abnormally low levels of potassium in the body).
Aldactone Dosage Information
a) Typical dosage recommendations
For adults, the recommended daily dose of Aldactone is between 25 and 400 mg depending on the condition being treated. In the case of children, the daily dose is determined by body weight. In both cases, the doses are given as a single dose or in divided doses. Additionally, the dosage is adjusted by doctors based on individual needs, response, tolerance level and improvement. For the treatment of primary aldosteronism, the typical daily dosage is 400 mg to be continued for approximately one month (long-term therapy) or 400 mg per day for four days. In patients presenting with signs of edema due to various medical conditions, Aldactone 100 mg is given daily and in essential hypertension the daily dose for adults is between 50 mg and 100 mg. For the treatment of hypokalaemia, the recommended daily dose of is between 25 mg and 100 mg while patients with severe heart failure should take 25 mg of a day.In case such patients cannot tolerate the typical dosage, it can be reduced to 25 mg of Aldactone each alternate day.
b.) Missing a dose
In case you have forgotten to take a particular dose of, take it as soon as you remember. However, leave the missed dose in case you are about to take the next normal dose. Never take more tablets than to make up for a forgotten dose.
